Towards sustainable, innovative and cost-effective surface processing of nanostructured thin/thick films

Thursday, 30 April 2015, 13:30-15:00
Talk given by Prof. Kwang-Leong Choy UCL Institute for Materials Discovery University College of London Abstract: The global drive towards the reduction of energy consumption, emissions and minimisation of waste are increasingly important and becoming major technological, political and societal issues. A promising approach to address the current challenges is to adopt sustainability during process design, innovation, integration and optimisation. The emerging of eco-friendly and sustainable non vacuum chemical processing technologies will be presented for the production of nanostructured materials and high value added superthin/thin films and thick coatings. The process principles and deposition mechanism will be highlighted for the fabrication of nanostructured materials with well controlled structure and composition at molecular level. These processes that are not only low cost, less polluting, conserve energy, reduce waste but also increase efficiency and enhance product performance. Case studies leading to sustainable nanostructured thin/thick films for a variety of applications, including clean energy, fine chemicals, engineering, health and biomedical sectors will be presented.
