Materials Characterization at the University of Manchester – Unique Capabilities

Wednesday, 04 November 2015, 16:30-18:00
Institute of Nanotechnology Seminar room 0-167
Talk given by Dr. Greg McMahon Department of Materials Science University of Manchester, UK Abstract: The objective of this presentation is to describe some of the unique materials characterization facilities located at the University of Manchester that may be of interest to researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with an eye towards collaborative research and projects. Specifically, the principles and various applications of a NanoSIMS instrument will be described. This tool is an imaging secondary ion mass spectrometer capable of imaging seven atomic or molecular ions simultaneously at high mass resolution, high sensitivity (ppm to ppb detection limits) and also at high spatial resolution (down to 50 nm). A new addition to the suite of instruments (to be installed early in 2016) is a new field emission electron microprobe equipped with four wavelength dispersive X-ray spectrometers, but perhaps most interesting is an additional soft x-ray emission spectrometer. This spectrometer uses a diffraction grating to allow for the simultaneous analysis of X-rays in the energy range from 50 to 210 eV (much like an EDS system), permitting light element analysis down to Li. But perhaps even more interesting is, with an energy resolution of better than 0.3 eV, the spectrometer is quite suitable for chemical state analysis. The principles of the spectrometer will be described, and some of our very preliminary results will be presented. Time permitting (or for informal discussions afterwards), applications of a Xe plasma FIB for large area (100’s of microns as opposed to 10’s of microns for a Ga source FIB) 3D EBSD and EDS data acquisition and large area FIB cross sectioning and micromachining, as well as descriptions and applications of a vast array of in-situ TEM capabilities and an introduction to the X-ray imaging facilities can be described.
