Surface modification for biomedical applications

Wednesday, 10 February 2016, 13:30-15:00
Institute of Nanotechnology Seminar room 0-167
Talk given by Dr. Matthias Gabriel Qatar Cardiovascular Research Center Doha, Qatar Abstract: Many approved materials for medical use – including polymers and metals – are not ideal regarding their biocompatibility. Cell-adhesive and low fouling properties are key to most applications, e.g. in tissue engineering and in blood-contacting devices. Besides plasma technologies various wet-chemistry methods are employed to endow surfaces with appropriate features while the materials bulk properties are largely unaffected. Covalent conjugation of peptides derived from extracellular matrix proteins, is a promising strategy to promote cell-adhesion and colonization. In contrast, many medical devices suffer from unspecific protein adsorption which mediates unwanted adhesion of platelets and bacteria. This issue may be addressed by anti-fouling surfaces, mostly accomplished via immobilization of hydrophilic polymers. Combining both, cell-adhesiveness and anti-fouling modification, results in surfaces that promote specific cell-adhesion while simultaneously reducing the attachment of undesired cells.
