Abstract:

As a part of our efforts to prepare thermally stable, Group 11 “metallachalcogenolate”, ME, precursors and develop their chemistry for the formation of luminescent, mixed-metal chalcogenide clusters MM’E, N-heterocyclic carbene metal–chalcogenolate complexes of the general formula [(NHC)M-ESiMe3] (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene; M = Cu, Ag, Au; E = S, Se, Te) have been prepared. Both larger NHCs such as IPr (IPr = 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) and smaller ones such as (iPr2-bimy = 1,3-diisopropylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene) can be used; reagents are generally prepared from the reaction between the corresponding carbene metal acetate, [(NHC)MOAc] and E(SiMe3)2. The reaction of [(IPr)M-ESiMe3] with a second type of metal salt (M’X) allows for the formation of ternary clusters MM’E, often in a stepwise fashion due to the strong bonding interaction between metals and the surface NHC ligands.
