Abstract:

Metal hydrides are a class of materials that make it possible to store hydrogen safely and with a volumetric density higher than liquid hydrogen. This presentation will begin with a brief comparison of the different hydrogen storage methods. After a critical review of the advantages and disadvantages of metal hydrides, we discuss the impact of mechanical deformations on the properties of metal hydrides. As examples, we will present our recent work on the first hydrogenation kinetics of magnesium as well as of AB5 and A2B alloys. In all these examples, cold rolling will be compared with the well-known technique of ball milling. We will conclude the presentation with proposals for collaboration between our laboratories.
