Abstract:

I will introduce the field of circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED), which can be seen as a microwave analog of quantum optics, or photonics. The role of real atoms is taken by so-called "artificial atoms", which are nothing more than mesoscopic, superconducting resonant structures, with a controllable single-photon nonlinearity and high intrinsic quality factor. These versatile cQED systems can be used for detection, material characterization, or quantum information processing, at the lowest level of noise allowed by the uncertainty principle. I will discuss some of the recent achievements and perspectives in this rapidly evolving field.
