Karlsruhe Nano Micro Facility

The Karlsruhe Nano Micro Facility (KNMF) is a virtual large-scale project whose individual facilities are located on the premises of Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe.

KNMF is available to all users from national and international companies and research institutions.

Different technologies are combined to a single technology platform which is able to structure and characterize a wide range of functional materials with a resolution in the micro- and nanometer range.

The latest state-of-the-art micro- and nanotechnology of non-classical semiconductor materials which is covered by this scientific infrastructure is made available to users and is developed further based on the experiences gained from this usage.

The structuring and characterization technologies are coordinated by three KNMF laboratories. Each technology is supervised by a scientific contact person.

The KNMF Laboratory for Microscopics and Spectroscopics is located on the premises of the Institute of Nanotechnology (INT) and is headed by Dr. Christian Kübel. Its technology portfolio comprises:

o      Scanning electron microscopy

o      Transmission electron microscopy

o      X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

o      Auger electron spectroscopy

o      X-ray fluorescence analysis

o      Electron beam microanalysis

o      Laser ablation ICP-MS

o      Thin-film characterization methods

KNMF covers the following range of offers:

·       Experimental access to micro- and nanotechnologies for structuring and characterization of functional materials in micro- and nanodimensions, e.g. within the framework of:

o      Short-term experiments

o      Development projects

o      Materials analysis and testing

o      Strategic development partnerships

o      Manufacturing services

·       Access to the expertise related to these technologies through counselling sessions prior to and during experiments.

·       Support in the application, performance, and review of experiments by our scientists and by the KNMF User Office.

In general, access to KNMF is possible by an application within the framework of a public announcement.  KNMF is available to users free of charge provided that the results obtained during using the facilities are published subsequently.
