Talk given by Dr. Keith White School of Chemistry University of Melbourne, Parkville, Victoria, 3010 !! Location: Seminar room 0-341 !! Abstract: Coordination networks constructed with simple ligands bridging metal centres have yielded robust and porous materials which have been shown to be capable of hosting a variety of guest molecules. With a view to developing novel materials for the convenient capture and storage of gaseous molecules under moderate pressures, our group has undertaken a synthetic and structural exploration of metal - ligand networks that contain narrow pores (5 – 7 Å in diameter) and are composed of lightweight components. This approach has two key advantages. Firstly, porous networks with narrow pore diameter allow any sorbed gas molecules to interact with more of the internal surfaces of the framework leading to higher gas binding enthalpies. Secondly, host networks that are constructed with components that are as lightweight as possible, will reduce the overall weight of the material, enhancing gravimetric uptake capacity.
