Abstract:
“Human enhancement" is a popular and mostly speculative theme in the media. Despite these science fiction fantasies, it is unlikely that nanotechnology will contribute to the enhancement of human nature. In the meantime, however, and nearly unnoticed, nanotechnology promotes the enhancement of material nature. Along with materials and computer science, nanotechnology effects the animation of matter, for example, by endowing it with intelligence and agency. This is partly due to the re-labeling of familiar processes but it nevertheless induces new ways of relating humans, technology, and nature. Concrete examples make this point - some are taken from nanotechnological product development and marketing, also to the immediate context of research practice. In conclusion, the presentation will highlight implications for responsible research.
