Development of SupraSensors and Assays for Molecular Diagnostics (ERC Consolidator and former Emmy-Noether group)


At Biedermann Labs, our group specializes in creating advanced supramolecular chemosensors for applications in sensing, imaging, and molecular diagnostics.

Designing artificial receptors for small biomolecules in complex biological media is challenging. Our approach combines specific analyte-host interactions with the non-classical hydrophobic effect to create high-affinity artificial receptors. This biomimetic strategy is both facile and versatile. Current advancements focus on monitoring dynamic processes, like enzymatic reactions, and adapting these sensors for use in living cells. We are employing optical spectroscopy methods (fluorescence, absorbance, chemiluminescence, chiroptical spectroscopy) and electrochemical methods (e.g. voltammetry and electrochemiluminescence) for signal readout.

We are a multidisciplinary team, merging expertise in organic synthesis and materials chemistry, assay development, data processing, and biofluid analysis. Our work is supported by the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant for the SupraSense project. Our vision is to lead innovation in supramolecular chemistry, contributing to advancements in molecular diagnostics and imaging. Open Positions

We are welcoming applications of Chemists and Data Scientists for Ph.D. and PostDoc positions. The roles involve interdisciplinary projects in designing novel sensors for biomolecule and drug sensing, and real-time biological process monitoring.
