“New optical theories for understanding and engineering light-matter interactions across spatial scales”
Abstract:
The understanding of the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and matter has played a crucial role in our technological development. Solar cells, the internet, mobile phones, GPS and X-rays are examples of it. In the last decades, spectacular advances in nanofabrication, molecular design, and material science are providing us with unprecedented tools for further addressing the energy, communication, and health challenges in our societies. Such rapid advances are stretching the traditional ways of understanding and engineering light-matter interactions, and often place experimental possibilities well ahead of their full theoretical understanding. The objective of my research is to develop new theories for understanding light-matter interactions, and use them in the engineering of functional devices. My main tools are symmetries and conservation laws, which are very general physical principles valid across spatial scales. In my talk, I will use examples to provide an overview of my research interests and results. In particular, I will explain how quantum mechanical simulations of molecules can be used to predict the optical properties of macroscopic devices. Chirality will be an overarching theme throughout the presentation.
