INT-Seminar "Development of SupraSensors and Assays for Molecular Diagnostics" by Dr. Frank Biedermann, Hybrid Nanomaterials, INT

Introduction by Prof. Luisa de Cola

Abstract:
Linking diseases and aging to fundamental biomolecular mechanism remains one of the greatest challenges in medicine, and the lack of understanding has slowed the development of new types of drugs and therapies. One reason for this shortcoming is the lack of molecular tools, i.e. options to detect and monitor small bioactive molecules such as metabolites and neurotransmitters for large patient cohorts.

Herein, I present our efforts to devise molecular recognition-based chemical sensors capable of detecting small bioactive molecules via low-cost and facile-to-use optical assays. New strategies for enhancing the affinity, selectivity and information-content available from the chemo- and nanosensors will also be exemplified. My presentation is hoped to be of interest for a general audience with different scientific backgrounds.
